What do we do?
We are industrial sandblasters and painters of steel.

How many years have we been in business?
We incorporated in 1975.

Where are we located?
Port Kells, North Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

What is sandblasting?
It is the process of cleaning steel to various degrees by using abrasives (sand) forced by compressed air.

Can you use other types of abrasives to clean steel? If so, what kinds?
Yes - staurolite, mineral slags, olivine, crushed glass and garnet.

What is the difference between commercial and industrial painting?
Industrial - is mainly fabricated steel and steel structures such as bridges, piling, pipes, steel tanks, etc.
Commercial – is mainly the interior and exterior of buildings made of steel or concrete used for warehousing, small factory businesses, etc.

Are we a union shop?
Yes – we have long term trained and ticketed staff – some of which have been with the union and Seaside Painters since 1978.

Do we do remote field work?
Yes - we offer on-site work for any location. Since incorporation in 1975, we have completed many large projects such as bridges and mills outside the Lower Mainland.

What/who are SSPC?
SSPC was founded in 1950 as the Steel Structures Painting Council, a non-profit professional society concerned with the use of coatings to protect industrial steel structures. In 1997, the name of the association was changed to The Society for Protective Coatings to better reflect the changing nature of coating technology and the ever-expanding types of construction materials.

SSPC is the only non-profit association that is focused on the protection and preservation of concrete, steel and other industrial and marine structures and surfaces through the use of high performance industrial coatings. SSPC is the leading source of information on surface preparation, coating selection, coating application, environmental regulations, and health and safety issues that affect the protective coatings industry.

Are we a SSPC certified shop?
Yes - our facility is QP3 certified “Enclosed Shop”.

Are there different levels of certification?
If so, what are they?

QP3 - evaluates a contracting company’s ability to perform
surface preparation and protective coating application in a fixed shop facility.

Enclosed shop – A permanent facility, enclosure or building (four walls to grade and a roof) where surface preparation and coating activities are normally conducted in an environment not subject to outdoor weather conditions and/or blowing dust.

Covered shop – A permanent facility, enclosure or building having a roof beneath where surface preparation and coating activities are normally conducted out of direct exposure to outdoor weather.

Open shop – A permanent area or facility with no roof or walls where surface preparation and coating activities are normally conducted. The area or facility is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and blowing dust.

There are twenty (20) QP3 certified shops in North America and only one in Canada - us!

What is WHMIS?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System – is a major response to Canadian workers’ right to know more about safety and health hazards of materials used in the workplace. WHMIS legislation provides employees, employers and suppliers nationwide with specific vital information about hazardous materials.
